To be an expert, you need to be the best in your field. In order to do that, you need to be successful at what you do. Most people find success once they’ve niched down. In my case, I have niched down to a very specific area: industrial real estate investing. In this area I primarily focus on flex space real estate and warehouse office space business parks. I am not an expert in crypto, the stock market, or other types of businesses, BUT I am an expert in industrial real estate, particularly flex space office parks.
Here is a fact for you:
you can’t be the best at everything, and you cannot give your all in multiple avenues. That is why finding the thing you are best at and centering your attention on it is crucial to finding success. Only then can you position yourself through your personal brand as an expert in your field, and become known for it.
Niching down allows you to focus your time and energy on being the best at what you do
Here is my 4 step guide for how to niche down so you too can position yourself to be an expert in your field.
1. Find the right sub-niche. You need to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your goals to determine what area you want to focus your business and brand on. When you know what you want your business to be known for, you can then move towards that goal and be successful. However, you need to make sure you are passionate about what you are planning to focus on. If you aren’t 100% in on what you are doing, your business will suffer.
2. Make sure there is a market big enough for your niche. For example, with the rise of e-commerce these past few years a lot of business owners are looking for exactly what I provide with my flex spaces. I know this and I am capitalizing on the demand that is present. Do your research and be smart about where you choose to focus your business.
3. Be specific with your sub-niche. You need to make sure that no one in your field is doing it like you do. The more specific you are, the easier it is for your target audience to find you, and you will be able to provide them with the service you offer better. This also gives you an opportunity to truly hone in your skills and provide a POV (point of view) that no one else has.
4. Position yourself as the go-to in your field. When you niche down, you can be known for that specific service on a much larger scale rather than somewhat known for a broader service. When you are able to position yourself as being #1 in your field, you can then emphasize your unique process in doing what you do.
Make the content. But first, you need to do the cool shit before you talk about it. Put yourself out there are grow your personal brand.
When you decide to focus on your niche you will find that you are able to grow faster, run your business better, and stand out from the competition. Again, take me for example, I have recently opened up a mastermind program for developing flex space real estate business parks called Flex Space Untapped. People join my inner circle because they have seen me rather than heard me do what I do through my social media. They know I am not only an expert in flex space, but I am a credible source within my field. No one does it like I do, and that is why I am known for what I do.
